Jagannathan Sampath –
Din is Noise
Software is the only medium, and it never dies. Beyond the utilitarian view of computer programming and into the courageous artistic possibilities opened by mathematics, we find Jagannathan Sampath, a self-described programmer and author of Din is Noise, a musical instrument for Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux. It allows you to use your mouse and keyboard to make high quality music. Din is inspired by central-Asian bowed string instruments like the Morin Khuur, the Kobyz, the Erhu, the Kamancheh, the Sarangi, and the Cello.
stress.fm caught up with Jagannathan Sampath in Caldas da Rainha, where the artist presented his work at ESAD, the local arts University. We talked about audio software, computer programming, new literacies, the mobile phone expansion in countries like India, music, education, and the inscrutable mysteries of bot politics.
